Follow these procedures when assisting blind or visually impaired individuals during an evacuation:
- Give verbal instructions to advise about the safest exit route, direction and distances using words such as 鈥渞ight,鈥� 鈥渓eft,鈥� 鈥渇orward,鈥� 鈥渂ackward鈥� and 鈥渢urn around.鈥� Allow blind and visually impaired individuals to use their cane as you talk them through evacuation.
- Do not聽grasp a visually impaired person鈥檚 arm. Ask if he or she would like to hold onto your arm as you exit, especially if there is debris or a crowd.
- Give other verbal instructions or information, e.g., elevators cannot be used.
